raid data recovery

A Redundant Array of Independent Drives (RAID) is a way of providing storage of the same data throughout different places on numerous differing hard disks as a preventive measure in case one or more of these drives falters. Basically, RAID systems mirror data across numerous platforms for data security purposes. Also referred to as disk mirroring, disk striping, and/or fault tolerance, there are numerous levels of RAID service that users can employ to assist with the storage of data. These levels are as follows:
  • Level 0: Although this level provides data striping it does not provide redundancy. This improves the performance of the drive, but it doesn't deliver any kind of fault tolerance.
  • Level 1: This level provides disk mirroring; a tool with which data is written across two drives so that if 1 fails, the other remains as a backup.
  • Level 3: This level is more or less the same as Level 0, with the one difference that it does provide a certain degree of fault tolerance.
  • Level 5: This level provides users with data striping at the byte level, along with stripe error correction info. The result is superior performance and good fault tolerance.
RAID levels 1, 3 & 5 are the most commonly utilized levels. Although implementation of RAID services have, in the past, been most commonly associated with business use, the recent falling prices of hard drives has allowed for a RAID crossover into affordable home usage as well. How do you know if a RAID system can be beneficial to your needs? RAID systems serve the following functions:
  • Immediate availability of data and recovery of lost data.
  • Redundancy of data at a chosen level. (I.E mirroring of hard drives across how many platforms?)
If you are looking for a highly secure data storage system that affords quicker retrieval of data and multiple simultaneous back-ups, then a RAID system might be exactly what you're looking for.
